Harvey Weinstein was arraigned on an additional sex crimes charge in a New York City courtroom Wednesday, roughly two months ahead of a retrial in the disgraced Hollywood producer’s landmark #MeToo case. “Thanks to this survivor who bravely came forward, Harvey Weinstein now stands indicted for an additional alleged violent sexual assault,” Bragg said. “This investigation is ongoing.”In all, more than 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual assault or harassment going back decades. Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood mogul whose alleged sexual misconduct fueled the #MeToo movement, has been indicted on new charges by a New York City grand jury, Manhattan prosecutors announced during a court hearing Thursday. The new indictment is under seal, prosecutor Nicole Blumberg told Judge Curtis Farber, who has set a trial date for Nov. 12. NBC News was the first to report this month that a grand jury had been convened to hear from women who had come forward with new accusations against Weinstein, 72. Weinstein was convicted in 2020 of third-degree rape of one woman and first-degree criminal sex act against another woman after a trial in New York, where he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. New York prosecutors announced months later that they intended to recharge Weinstein for the same crimes and possibly bring forward new charges.

Harvey Weinstein had heart surgery Monday after he complained of health issues and was moved from a New York City jail to a hospital, a representative for the disgraced movie mogul said. Weinstein, whose 2020 rape conviction was overturned in April, remained in recovery at the intensive care unit at Bellevue Hospital on Monday night, said the representative, Craig Rothfeld. Weinstein was moved from Rikers Island jail to the hospital after complaining that he didn’t feel well and had experienced significant weight gain from medication, Rothfeld said. He underwent pericardiocentesis surgery Monday morning to alleviate a significant amount of fluid from his lungs and heart, Rothfeld said. In July, Weinstein was hospitalized for a “myriad of health conditions” and tested positive for Covid-19 and double pneumonia, his representative said.

But that system unwittingly supplied the getaway vehicle when a Rikers Island detainee made a break for it outside Bellevue Hospital Center on Wednesday night, two people with knowledge of the incident said. The detainee, James Mossetty, had been jailed since January on assault and drug charges, and he was taken earlier this month to Bellevue, where he was treated for psychiatric problems, among other things, one of the people said. On Wednesday night, just before 10 p.m., two New York City Department of Correction officers were supposed to be putting Mr. Mossetty into a van for a return trip to Rikers when he somehow escaped from the hospital’s secure loading area, the city officials said.

But the DA also must prove the actual business records crime, for which Trump has been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. How I see it, Cohen’s testimony only satisfied half the equation beyond a reasonable doubt. Allen H. Weisselberg, Donald J. Trump’s longtime financial lieutenant, was sentenced Wednesday to five months in the Rikers Island jail complex for perjury, capping a legal saga that has now landed him behind bars twice. Mr. Weisselberg was not charged in the same case as Mr. Trump, but he would not be headed to jail if not for his former boss’s own troubles: Prosecutors set their sights on Mr. Weisselberg after he refused to turn on Mr. Trump. Last month, Mr. Weisselberg, 76, pleaded guilty to two counts of perjury committed while he was being questioned in 2020 by the New York attorney general’s office, which was investigating Mr. Trump for fraud. In a brief and perfunctory appearance before the judge, Laurie Peterson, Mr. Weisselberg, wearing a dark jacket and a blue surgical mask, showed little emotion. When the judge asked if he wanted to say anything, he simply responded, “no, your honor.”

New York City has agreed to pay more than $28 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of Nicholas Feliciano, who suffered severe brain damage after he attempted to hang himself in a Rikers Island jail cell as more than half a dozen correction officers stood by. If approved by a judge, it will be among the largest pretrial settlements ever to be awarded to a single plaintiff in a civil rights case in New York City. Mr. Feliciano was 18 and had a long history of psychiatric hospitalizations and suicide attempts when he was sent to Rikers in late 2019 on a parole violation. The Bronx district attorney filed felony charges against three of the guards and a captain in 2022. Last year, two of the guards pleaded guilty to official misconduct, a misdemeanor, and avoided jail time.

As the week began, it looked as though Donald Trump would finally face consequences — or at least, a consequence — for his actions. Last month, a New York state trial court found the former president liable for inflating his net worth and misleading banks and insurers in order to receive favorable loans for his various businesses and commercial enterprises. The judge, Arthur F. Engoron, imposed a penalty of $454 million, to be paid into the state’s general fund. Letitia James, New York’s attorney general, gave Trump a 30-day grace period to secure bond as he pursued appeal of the judgment. And even if he could, Trump would need to pledge at least as much in collateral to the company.
